Eastern vs Semi-Western: Which Forehand Grip Should You Use?

Bolor Enkhbayar·Updated May 28, 2026·5 min read

Quick answer

Use an eastern forehand grip if you like a flatter, more penetrating ball and you play a lot of low balls. Use a semi-western if you want easier topspin and you face a lot of high, heavy balls. Both are correct. The semi-western is the most common modern choice because topspin and high balls are easier, but a clean eastern still wins matches.

What the grips actually change

Your grip sets your natural contact height and how easily you generate topspin. The eastern grip, palm more behind the handle, gives a flatter, driving ball and loves contact around waist height. The semi-western, palm rotated more under, makes topspin and high contact easier but can make very low balls awkward.

Top Tennis Training compares eastern, semi-western, and western grips and who each one suits.

Choose eastern if

  • You like to drive the ball flat and take time away from opponents.
  • You play on fast or low-bouncing courts where balls stay down.
  • You come to the net a lot, since the eastern transitions to a volley grip easily.

Choose semi-western if

  • You want heavy topspin and margin over the net.
  • You face a lot of high, heavy balls that you want to take comfortably.
  • You play a baseline game on slower courts where balls bounce up.

The honest answer for most players

If you are unsure, the semi-western is the safer default for the modern game, because topspin gives margin and high balls are common. But the best grip is the one you can groove and repeat. Do not switch every week. Pick one, commit, and build your topspin and contact point around it.

The short version

Eastern for a flatter, penetrating ball and low courts. Semi-western for topspin and high balls. Both work. Pick one and groove it.

Frequently asked

Is eastern or semi-western grip better?

Neither is universally better. Eastern gives a flatter, more penetrating ball and handles low balls well. Semi-western gives easier topspin and handles high balls. The semi-western is the more common modern default.

Should a beginner use eastern or semi-western?

Many coaches start beginners with an eastern or mild semi-western because it is simple and versatile. The most important thing is to pick one grip and groove it rather than switching constantly.

Which grip has more topspin?

The semi-western generates topspin more easily because of the lower hand position, which is why it is popular in the modern baseline game. An eastern can still produce topspin with a steeper swing.
